Apollo 17: The Untold Story of the Last Men on the Moon (Film)
Apollo 17: The Untold Story of the Last Men on the Moon (2011) is a documentary that tells the story of three brave astronauts, Eugene Cernan, Harrison Schmitt, and Ronald Evans, who were chosen to fly NASA's final mission. The mission was the crowning glory of man's lunar exploration, and the documentary features NASA footage and exclusive interviews with space scientists who worked on the Apollo program during the 60's and 70's. Apollo 17 was the most recent time humans have set foot on the Moon or traveled beyond low Earth orbit. Commander Gene Cernan and Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt walked on the Moon, while Command Module Pilot Ronald Evans orbited above. Schmitt was the only professional geologist to land on the Moon, selected in place of Joe Engle under pressure to send a scientist to the Moon. The mission's heavy emphasis on science included new experiments, including a biological experiment containing five mice carried in the command module. The landing site was Taurus?Littrow, where formations thought to be volcanic in nature had been viewed and pictured from orbit. All three crew members had backed up previous Apollo lunar missions, giving them more time for geology training. Launched on December 7, 1972, Apollo 17 was a "J-type" mission that included three days on the lunar surface, extended scientific capability, and the use of the third Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV). Cernan and Schmitt landed in the Taurus?Littrow valley and completed three moonwalks, taking lunar samples and deploying scientific instruments. Evans remained in lunar orbit in the command and service module, taking scientific measurements and photographs. The spacecraft returned to Earth on December 19, breaking several records for crewed spaceflight. Apollo 17: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_17
