Apollo 9 by Jackson Tyler

Apollo 9, launched on March 3, 1969, was a crucial mission in NASA's Apollo program, aimed at testing the Lunar Module (LM) in Earth orbit and validating systems and procedures for a future Moon landing. The crew consisted of Commander James McDivitt, Command Module Pilot David Scott, and Lunar Module Pilot Rusty Schweickart. Apollo 9 was the first mission to fly the full Apollo spacecraft stack, including the Command and Service Module (CSM) and the Lunar Module (LM). It demonstrated the LM's descent and ascent propulsion systems, proving its independence in space and rendezvousing with the CSM. The mission also achieved the first manned Apollo docking and undocking maneuvers, including the first docked service propulsion system burn. It also included the first extravehicular activity (EVA) using the portable life support system backpack, a first for NASA. The mission tested translunar injection simulation by restarting the S-IVB stage engine twice to place it into solar orbit. All primary mission objectives were met, and the few off-nominal conditions encountered did not affect the mission's success. Apollo 9 was a complete success and a pivotal rehearsal, qualifying the Lunar Module for lunar orbit operations, setting the stage for Apollo 10 and the eventual Moon landing on Apollo 11.
