ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher will be speaking at the start-of-the-year press briefing on 9 January. - Video credit: ESA - European Space Agency - ESA's activities are classified as mandatory and optional. Mandatory programs, such as future project studies, technology research, and shared technical investments, are funded by the General Budget and Space Science program budget. Member States contribute to these programs based on their Gross National Product. Optional programs, such as Earth observation, telecommunications, satellite navigation, space transportation, and the International Space Station, are funded by voluntary contributions. These programs are open to all Member States.
