Mission to Mars (2000) (Film)

Mission to Mars is a science fiction adventure film directed by Brian De Palma, starring Gary Sinise, Tim Robbins, and Don Cheadle. In 2020, the Mars I mission, led by Luke Graham, lands on Mars and discovers a mysterious bright white formation in the Cydonia region. The crew detects a strange low sound and scans the structure with radar, revealing it to be made of metal. A large vortex forms, killing all crew members except Luke. The formation is revealed to be part of a giant humanoid face, emitting a powerful electromagnetic pulse that damages spacecraft electronics. Luke sends a distress message to the orbiting Resupply Module (REMO), and a rescue mission is launched with Commander Woody Blake, his wife Terri Fisher, Jim McConnell, and technician Phil Ohlmyer. During Mars orbit approach, the rescue ship suffers micrometeoroid damage causing an explosion. The crew abandons the ship and uses spacesuits to reach the REMO, with Woody sacrificing himself to save Terri. On Mars, the survivors find Luke living in a greenhouse, explaining that the formation's signals represent a 3D model of human DNA missing a pair of chromosomes. The crew completes the sequence and transmits it, causing a door to open in the structure. Inside, they find an environment resembling Earth and encounter a Martian apparition that reveals Mars was once inhabited but destroyed by an asteroid.
