Astronauts were being sought to complete the first mission inside the Mercury Shuttle, and to be successful they had to meet three main requirements: they had to fit into the cramped Mercury, and so be no larger than 5ft 11 inches; they had to have an aeronautical engineering degree, and they had to be test pilots.
