Space to Ground (11 April 2025)

Space to Ground (S2G) (11 April 2025) - Presented by Reagan Scharfetter & Nulifar Ramji - Video credit: NASA JSC - Readout by Frederic Eger - NASA astronaut Johnny Kim, along with his two cosmonaut crewmates, Sergei Ryzhikov and Alexander Zubritskiy, launched aboard the Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft on April 8th from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The trio orbited Earth for just over 3 hours before docking to the Prashal Docking Module of the Orbital Outpost, beginning their 8-month research mission. Longer-duration spaceflight is on the horizon, but understanding what happens to humans in low-Earth orbit before making the journey to Mars that can last up to 2 years is crucial. Astronauts today typically spend about 6 to 8 months on station, while some NASA astronauts like Frank Rubio have spent over a year. An integrated protocol called CIPHR is bringing together a huge number of disciplines to investigate the many aspects of a long-duration human mission on the International Space Station, and NASA astronaut Johnny Kim is a participant in this protocol. With the arrival of Kim and his crewmates, it's almost time to say farewell to another crew, including NASA astronaut Don Pettit. The oldest active NASA astronaut will celebrate his 70th birthday on April 20th after landing in Kazakhstan following an approximate four-hour trek from the space station. Pettit spent his seven-month stay aboard the orbiting laboratory conducting research to enhance on-orbit metal 3D printing capabilities, explore plant growth under varying water conditions, and investigate fire behavior in microgravity. For every single day since November 2, 2000, humans have been living aboard the International Space Station. Teams of dedicated people are constantly monitoring consoles on Earth to ensure the safety of the crews and the success of their mission. Flight controllers discuss what it takes to keep things running smoothly on the space station on the latest edition of Houston We Have a Podcast. - More about research being operated on Station: https://www.nasa.gov/iss-science ; https://www.nasa.gov/stemonstation; https://x.com/Space_Station; http://facebook.com/iss; http://instagram.com/iss
