Space to Ground (17 Jan. 2025)

Space to Ground (17 Jan. 2024) NASA astronauts Nick Haig and Sonny Williams have completed their 273rd spacewalk, replacing a rate gyro assembly, installing patches for damaged light filters, and replacing a reflector device used for navigational data on an international docking adapter. This marks the fourth spacewalk for Haig and the eighth for Williams. On January 23, Sonny Williams and Butch Wilmore will remove a radio frequency group antenna assembly from the station's truss and collect samples from outside the space station to examine whether the spacecraft releases microorganisms. This research could help determine the need for changes to crewed spacecraft, including spacesuits used to explore destinations where life may exist now or previously existed, and to limit the spread of human contamination. Wilmore and Williams will also prepare a spare elbow joint for the Canadarm2 robotic arm in case it is needed for a replacement. In early January, multiple destructive fires broke out in Los Angeles, California, due to dry landscapes and winds that gusted up to 100 miles per hour. The lack of rain contributed to the dangerous fire weather, necessitating reliable models of fire susceptibility to protect public safety and support natural resource planning and risk management. Researchers demonstrated that data from the space station's ECOSTRESS instrument has played a significant role in the ability of machine learning algorithms to predict wildfire susceptibility. ECOSTRESS measures water use efficiency and other plant water dynamics on Earth, with water use efficiency consistently emerging as the leading factor in predicting wildfires. As always, NASA invites viewers to visit nasa.gov for more stories, blogs, updates, and media broadcasts. Happy birthday to all NASA astronauts and Bush, and happy birthday to all.
