Space to Ground (31 Jan. 2025)

Space to Ground (31 Jan. 2024) :NASA astronauts Sonny Williams and Butch Wilmore conducted a spacewalk to collect samples of microscopic microbial life on the outside of the International Space Station. The mission was part of NASA's ongoing monitoring of its microbial community since the launch of the first module of the space station. The collected data could help researchers understand how microorganisms survive and reproduce in the harsh environment of space. Williams has the most cumulative spacewalking time of any female astronaut, surpassing former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson's record. The six-hour spacewalk experience involves various emotions, including heat, cold, crushing it, and experiencing unexpected setbacks. The astronauts' journey is a testament to the sacrifices made by astronauts to risk their lives for their own safety. The astronauts also shared their experiences with students who would like to call up the astronauts in space and chat with them. Applications are now open for amateur radio enthusiasts to make contact with the space station, allowing students to have a 10-minute conversation with the astronauts. This opportunity allows students to ask questions and answer questions with the astronauts. In conclusion, the spacewalk was a significant event in NASA's mission to study the microbial community on the outside of the International Space Station. The astronauts' experience highlights the importance of understanding and addressing the challenges faced by microbes in our daily lives. Video produced at and by NASA Johnson Space Center.
