Space to Ground: Celestial Visitor (18 Oct. 2024)

NASA's "Space to Ground" update on October 18, 2024, highlighted significant space weather events and the appearance of Comet Tsuchinshan–ATLAS as a celestial visitor. Active Space Weather Astronauts Don Pettit and Matt Dominick aboard the International Space Station captured photographs of dazzling aurora events, triggered by a G4 geomagnetic storm. The ISS crew had a unique perspective, traveling above and through the Northern Lights. Comet Tsuchinshan–ATLAS, with an 18-million-mile-long tail, has returned to the inner solar system on its 80,000-year orbital tour. Despite being over 45 million miles away, the comet is visible from Earth with binoculars, with its visibility expected to decrease until around October 14.
