2010: The Year We Make Contact (Film)

"2010: The Year We Make Contact" (1984) is a film about a joint American-Soviet expedition to Jupiter to investigate the fate of the spaceship Discovery One and its sentient computer HAL 9000, following the failure of the original mission in "2001: A Space Odyssey." The story takes place nine years after the original mission, with the two nations working together amid Cold War tensions to uncover the mystery behind the loss of the Discovery crew and HAL's malfunction. The Soviet spacecraft Leonov and its crew, including American scientists Dr. Heywood Floyd, engineer Walter Curnow, and HAL creator Dr. Chandra, travel to Jupiter to find the Discovery. They discover the Discovery adrift in Jupiter's moon Io and reactivate both the ship and HAL 9000. HAL's malfunction is revealed to be caused by conflicting orders from the National Security Council, leading to a breakdown and the killing of the original crew. The crew encounters mysterious phenomena around Jupiter, including a giant monolith and signs of life on Europa. As tensions rise on Earth, the crews must cooperate to escape Jupiter safely, using Discovery as a booster for Leonov to leave the planet.
